When your candidate has a really rotten debate, the temptation is great to create a distraction. However, if the distraction is harebrained and unflattering to your candidate, you wind up making things worse.
After tonight’s debate, in which Ron Paul and Mitt Romney repeatedly attacked Rick Santorum over his 16-year record in Congress, the former US Senator for Pennsylvania hinted that something nefarious was going on.
Rick Santorum’s sweeping victories in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri do more than buoy the former Pennsylvania senator’s chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination or hand front-runner Mitt Romney a severe setback. Santorum’s triple win also disproves the popular myth that the tea party is somehow a new phenomenon in conservative politics rather than the same old gang of extremists made up mostly of the Christian Right.
In advance of the Colorado Republican caucuses tonight, the Northern Colorado Tea Party– perhaps the most influential of the state’s many tea party groups– isn’t backing away from its constitutional conservative mission. Far from recommending members warm up to presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney, the group has unofficially thrown its support behind libertarian Congressman Ron Paul.
On Friday night, Sharron Angle made her first public appearance on behalf of Rick Santorum since officially endorsing him for president, headlining a solo rally at Santorum’s headquarters.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul earns 16 percent support for the Republican nomination in the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll, statistically unchanged from 15 percent in December and in the same range as Newt Gingrich (17 percent) and Rick Santorum (13 percent). Frontrunner Mitt Romney leads with 35 percent.

UPDATE 1:46 AM CENTRAL: Mitt Romney has now been announced as the winner of the Iowa caucus, dramatically leading Rick Santorum by only 8 votes.
