Grayson proposes Paid Vacation Act
Democratic Rep., Alan Grayson, is introducing the Paid Vacation Act, legislation that would require private companies with more than 100 employees to pay for a week’s vacation, for both full time and part-time employees after a year on the job. Three years after legislation is passed, companies with 50 or more employees would have to pay a week’s vacation as well.
Supporters claim the federal legislation would decrease the number of sick days, improve productivity, and boost employee happiness. Detractors, however, counter that a one-size-fits-all mandate is not the answer, nor will it positively affect small businesses. Others opposed also claim that small businesses would cap new employment so they wouldn’t have to pay the extra expenses.
What do you think? Should the federal government mandate paid vacation for private corporations? Does it possess the constitutional authority to do so? Would it help or hurt private business?

Government needs to “butt out”—if it doesn’t concern national security–leave it alone-they need to discover what their duties are–like read the Constitution and Amemdments–maybe the declaration of independence & what about the TEN COMMANDMENTS—Seems everytime government starts getting involved, the more things get totally out of wack- to put it mildly….Businesses know their business better than the government–not that they are always fair with their workers–but Heaven help them when the govenment gets involved. thank you

JaneK,
Unfortunately, Congressman Grayson represents my district–Florida’s 8th district.
Be assured I voted for his opponent in the last election and will run against him myself in the next one if I have to. There is clearly no place in the Constitution that gives the Federal government the authority to interfere in private business like Grayson wants to do.
Grayson’s also the idiot who wanted to give the government the right to determine what’s reasonable and not reasonable compensation for private business to pay. Look at:

What do you think? A: not surprised
Should the federal government mandate paid vacation for private corporations? A: No
Does it possess the constitutional authority to do so? A: This question is irrelevant. Congress and the “pres-o-dent” have shown total disregard for the U.S. Constitution. They have exalted themselves above the law and answer to none other than their own bellies, generally speaking.
Would it help or hurt private business? Gee, let’s see, if the implication is that a business is responsible to “boost employee happiness”, wouldn’t employees then have grounds to sue their employer when they are not happy? How could this be good for business or ultimately for a free society?

Where’s this in The US Constitution? I can’t locate anything in Article 1 that relates. Maybe Congress is overstepping its bounds and needs a “heads up” reminder on July 4, 2009. I’ll be in DC with my poster and my Gadsden Flag.

Mandate vacations? I think we need our government to watch over us but not by doing things like this for workers. A government that supports workers is a commie government. We need to get back to the days of Reagan where people like Falwell and Ralph Reed could legislate what we read and watch on TV. There is a moral crisis in this country, people speaking out against the war and other liberal actions. We need more religious war like people to run things. If other countries dont agree with us we should invade them and show them what freedom means.

Yes I agree. CA should not get a bailout, if they do there will be no money left for American businesses like Citi Bank and Bank of America, those banks deserve our money. If CA gets a bailout they will use if for things like schools and commie fascist state run hospitals and we don’t need those, we need only corporations that run things efficiently and should be running our school systems. PRIVATIZE SCHOOLS NOW!!!
If people cant afford schools or doctors then tough luck, women can take care of things like teaching kids at home or medical stuff. I think that the women on this site would agree that they should be at home cooking and taking care of kids and not be out trying to do things they are not designed to do. The Bible says that women should obey men and that women should do everything the man wants. It is movements like these that show who the real Americans are and we are real Americans not like those fascist commie liberals who believe in equal rights for men and women.

OK lets try this one more time… 10th Admendment to Constitution… THE STATES DELEGATE AUTHORITY TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NOT VICE-VERSA.. Now we on the state level need to continue with our tea parties, letters, emails and phone calls to remind them that Washington,DC dont hand down rights to the states. We elected those jerks to represent us not rule over us and they need to be reminded of this.

This is typical of the liberals who are running our government now - but the sad part is that many people think that this interference is beneficial to the workers.

Does the United States government NEVER shrink from sticking their noses where they don’t belong??! I say give this politicial a PERMANENT vacation; he and all the rest along with him. And while we’re at it, take their pensions, health care and perks too. That doesn’t seem to make them happy - only making more and more laws so that they have more and more control.
Yeah, and I have a Ron Paul bumper sticker and I don’t care WHO KNOW IT!

Government GET OUT OF OUR LIVES…unfortunately, they won’t…until WE get THEM out of our lives…they will keep getting into every part of our living. How do you like the gas prices lately???? Tell us what cars we will drive, take the guns away, spend, spend, and our lives and those of our kids will never be the same. Now for our health…walk, ride a bike to work or take public transportation.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE WHO WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO TELL THEM HOW TO RUN THEIR BUSINESSES? Pretty soon the Democrats will be telling us how many toilet tissues to use when we are in the bathroom. I can’t believe there are so many completely ignorant politicians out there making laws that piece by piece destroy the freedoms granted in the U.S. Constitution.
